Which Size of Birkin Bag is Best for You?

Hermes Birkin handbags come in sizes 25cm, 30cm, 35cm and 40cm. But how do you know which size is right for you?

There is a lot of hype about the extraordinary glamour of owning a Hermes Birkin handbag. But there is very little information on the different sizes. You think you’re lucky if you see just one! So if you never see the different sizes, how on earth can you choose the right one?

Lilac Blue London has a private showroom in Mayfair where it is possible to view and try different sizes, colours and leathers of Birkins and Kelly bags. Visits are strictly by appointment and lucky customers are treated to a consultation to ensure they find the perfect bag.

The first Birkins were made only in size 35cm. This is a large every day handbag, which will give years and years of practical use: from a work bag, to a travel bag, to a baby bag.  Then Hermes introduced the larger 40cm Birkin, made to look fabulous when paraded by the likes of Marc Jacobs:

… and then years later the Birkin 30cm arrived, which Victoria Beckham grew fond of prior to launching her own brand of bags:

And now we also have the Birkin 25. The handles are very short, so only the daintiest amongst us can place the forearm through it.

A size 20 was made as a limited edition in 2012, a Tiny Birkin click here to see more detail. It was 14.5cm long and really really small, and has since been discontinued.

Overall, the size you choose should really depend on your size, your style, and where you will wear it.

How to choose your size: our very general guidelines:

If you are 5’6” tall (171cm) or taller, a 30cm or 35cm bag will look well proportioned. If you are smaller and slim, a 35cm can look on the large size, especially with the recent fashion for smaller bags. Having said that, the bag works really well as a serious work bag, and a travel bag.

Smaller ladies can wear the 30 or 25 with ease. For me: I’m 5’6” and relatively broad. I love the size 35, and it took me a year to downgrade my 35cm Birkin to a size 30cm Birkin. For me, the size 25 is only for evenings, and frankly, I still think I look ridiculous. Today I carried a pink 35cm instead of my usual black 30cm, and I have to tell you I LOVED wearing it! It’s so easy: my two giant iphones, my enormous sunglasses case, the essential make up bag, my friend’s child’s snacks… just pile it all in! A quick word of advice: beware, it can get very heavy!
