Originally used for making saddles, Barenia is a smooth water resistant leather. It wears well and because it absorbs oils found on skin develops a beautiful patina over time. This leather is usually paired with white contrast stitching.

Introduced in 2019 Madame is a lightweight, stamped leather like Epsom, but with a softer feel, and a finer grain. It maintains its shape well and is ideal for structured Birkin and Kelly Sellier bags.

The successor to Courchevel leather, Epsom is an embossed calfskin with a fine grain and subtle sheen. It absorbs colour well and the rigid nature of the leather means it is often used for Sellier style bags.

A smooth leather with no visible grain which gives it an almost polished, glossy appearance. It has a higher shine than many Hermès leathers but this does mean it is more prone to scratches and marks.

Made from the male bull calf, Clemence has been in production longer than Togo, and at first glance appears almost identical. The grain is larger, and the leather heavier which means that bags made with Clemence tend to slouch more.

One of Hermès’ most recognisable leathers, Togo is a supple, pebbled leather and features a distinctive vertical grain that is slightly raised to the touch. Although lightweight it holds its shape well and has the advantage of being resistant to scratches and can even withstand a little light rain.

Hermès Colour

Fauve Barenia is a signature colour that exemplifies the house’s deep-rooted heritage in equestrian craftsmanship and timeless elegance. “Fauve,” meaning “tawny” in French, refers to the rich, golden-brown hue of the leather – reminiscent of saddle leather.

Hardware

Hermès Palladium hardware is made of solid brass, giving weight and durability, and then plated in precious metal. Palladium belongs to the platinum group of metals and has a brighter and whiter look than silver. More precious than gold, palladium is hard wearing and scratch-resistant.
