Hermès Construction
Originally designed by John Paul Gaultier in 2004 the Shoulder Birkin or Kelly is a large (42cm), more elongated and slouchy version of the original with taller handles which allowed it to be carried on the shoulder. The Shoulder Birkin was re-issued in 2025 in 29cm and 39cm sizes, the bag retains the same shape and proportions.
Hermès Material
Made from the male bull calf, Clemence has been in production longer than Togo, and at first glance appears almost identical. The grain is larger, and the leather heavier which means that bags made with Clemence tend to slouch more.
Hermès Colour
Etain is a classic Hermès shade introduced in 2011, inspired by the muted, elegant tone of pewter. Translating to “tin” in French, Étain is a medium to dark grey with cool undertones, offering a sophisticated alternative to black as a versatile neutral.
Hardware
Hermès Palladium hardware is made of solid brass, giving weight and durability, and then plated in precious metal. Palladium belongs to the platinum group of metals and has a brighter and whiter look than silver. More precious than gold, palladium is hard wearing and scratch-resistant.
