Hermès Style & Size
The Birkin 30 is favoured for its versatile proportions - large enough for daytime functionality but refined enough to carry into the evening. It transitions effortlessly between casual, business, and formal settings, making it a go-to bag for women who want form, function, and status in one piece. It can hold all the necessities, including iPad and an awful lot besides, it doesn’t get heavy, doesn’t look enormous at a restaurant table and is hugely resilient. It can be opened with ease and does not get too heavy. From this size up, Birkins are held on the forearm, your hand passing through the two handles.
Hermès Construction
Created by Hermès jeweller Pierre Hardy in 2011, the Ghillies style is based on a traditional style of shoe from Scotland called the “ghillie brogue,” whose perforations allow the leather to dry out after the shoe has been worn outdoors. Hardy added the curved perforated trims to both Birkins and Kellies, either in the same colour as the body of the bag, or in a contrasting colour. The Ghillies detailing was available on limited edition bags only and went out of production in around 2015.
Hermès Material
First produced in 2022, Sombrero is smooth with a matte appearance. It is a sturdy leather and often used in structured bags like the Constance and Kelly.
Made from smooth calfskin, this leather is renowned for its sleek, glossy finish and structured silhouette. Over time, it develops a rich patina adds depth and sheen to the piece. Though it may show light scratches or water spots with wear, Box leather is prized for the way it ages—softening slightly while retaining its shape.
This effect is achieved by gentle hand buffing with felt to enhance the natural texture leaving a completely matte finish with a subtle shine. The Porosus Crocodile has smaller, more symmetrical scales in a more uniform pattern than the Nilocitus and the matte finish means marks and slight scratches are less visible. Porosus crocodile is signified by a caret ^ symbol next to the Hermes name on the bag.
Hermès Colour
Rouge H is one of the house’s most iconic and historic colours, dating back to the early 20th century and has been used in everything from bags and small leather goods to car interiors and furniture. It is a deep, sophisticated shade of red with brown and burgundy undertones. Often described as a “brick red” or “blood red,” Rouge H (short for Rouge Hermès) is timeless and surprisingly versatile.
Hardware
Hermès Gold hardware is made of solid brass, giving weight and durability, plated in either 18 carat gold, or for some Special Order bags, 24 carat gold and then hand polished. Choose gold hardware for a warm, luxurious finish to your bag.
